A unique find! This charming set of plates depicts the Rideau Canal Bytown (Ottawa) featuring a rich green multi-colour transferware scene - part of the 'Scenes of Early Canada' collection made by Ridgway in Staffordshire, England. Set of 4 plates.
The image is based on one contained in the 1842 publication of Bartlett's Scenes of Early Canada - a publication that featured scenes made by William Henry Bartlett who travelled through eastern Canada in about 1838 creating watercolours and sketches. Bartlett's art was later engraved onto steel plates for mass printing. These date to the mid 20th century.
The plates feature hand-applied colours over a dark green transfer.
